Eight people have died and one passenger has sustained serious injuries in a road accident involving a minibus taxi and a truck on the N4 Toll Road between Ngodwana and Waterval Onder on Tuesday morning, June 16.

The Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison reported that both vehicles were travelling towards Mbombela.

Sunday World, citing the department’s spokesperson Moeti Mmusi, reported that the eight individuals who lost their lives were pronounced dead at the scene. The sole survivor is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital for serious injuries.

Mmusi advised motorists to avoid the road to prevent delays as emergency personnel continue recovery operations, stating that investigations were lodged.

“The minibus taxi has a Mozambican registration, and we are still trying to verify the identities of the deceased.”

Emergency services, law enforcement officials and traffic authorities responded to the scene.
