Matsapha – The minister of justice and constitutional affairs, Prince Simelane, stated that offenders in His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) facilities now completely customise the uniforms of the correctional officers.

He was addressing His Majesty King Mswati III and Her Majesty the Indlovukazi at the 18th correctional day in Matsapha on Friday.

Dignitaries such as the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice, chiefs, cabinet ministers, and members of Parliament, as well as members of the public, attended the day of showcasing and parading for Their Majesties. Local correctional services leaders from Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Mozambique were also present.

The HMCS’ adaptive rehabilitation technique not only corrects misbehaviour, but it also teaches offenders a variety of skills.

They can choose from commercialised agriculture, technical and vocational skills, upholstery, confectionery skills, and clothing and tailoring, among other industries covered by the programme. He also stated that it prepares them for life after serving prison sentences. The active Vulamasango also offers academic courses, and the institution employs psychologists and specialists to address mental health difficulties.

“As you can see the parading officers, Your Majesty, are how beautifully dressed they are; the uniform is produced by our uncles and aunties (offenders). This significantly reduces costs to the government,” the prince said.

Offenders have begun to participate in national events as part of the rehabilitation program.
