Mexico City – Mexico’s 2-0 Fifa World Cup victory over Ecuador celebrations in Mexico City left at least three people dead due to asphyxiation. 

The health authorities in that city said a 19-year-old woman, a 48-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died in a cramped space and were found unconscious as crowds descended on the city on Tuesday.

More than one million spectators were said to have packed the streets around the Angel of Independence monument in downtown Mexico City as the country made history and ended years of World Cup defeats. Mexico City’s population has surpassed 20 million making it one of the densely populated places on earth.

City Mayor Clara Brugada sent messages of condolences to the victims’ families and pledged support in the coming days. 

Emergency services performed CPR on the patients before they were transferred to a hospital. They were declared dead there from suffocation. Their families had identified them, it was said.

Mayor Brugada urged fans to celebrate with responsibility, care, and empathy.”

Mexico’s victory sparked wild celebrations in the Estadio Azteca and across large parts of the city, where fireworks could be seen being lit long after the final whistle. 

On the pitch, the Mexicans ensured that they broke their 40-year win drought season by making it to the Round of 16; they last defeated Bulgaria in the Round of 16 when they were the hosts in 1986.

Mexico advanced to the next round with goals from Julian Quinones and Raúl Jiménez in the first half, causing a surge of celebration throughout the team.
