Kenya eyes power deal after Ethiopian dam inauguration

Addis Ababa – Kenya President William Samoei Ruto has welcomed the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), describing it as Africa’s largest hydropower facility with an estimated capacity of 6,450 megawatts. The dam, fully funded by the Ethiopian people, was officially opened in the Benishangul-Gumuz region.

Ruto said Kenya is ready to sign a power purchase agreement to import surplus electricity from Ethiopia, aiming to boost industries, ICT hubs, manufacturing, and agro-processing. He added that the deal could create jobs and strengthen regional competitiveness.
