Incomati commission boosts cross-border water coordination

Badplaas – The Incomati and Maputo Watercourse Commission (INMACOM) convened a two-day meeting for communication practitioners from key basin organisations at Badplaas Resort in South Africa on Monday, 17 November 2025. Attending institutions included the Komati Basin Water Authority (KOBWA), Joint River Basin Authorities-project Board (JRBA), ARA-Sul, IP, South Africa’s Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), and Mozambique’s Direcção Nacional de Gestão de Recursos Hídricos.

The meeting focused on drafting a joint communication activity calendar for 2026, reviewing INMACOM’s Communication Strategy and Action Plan, and identifying cross-border awareness initiatives aimed at water security, flood-risk management, and climate-change adaptation across the Incomati-Maputo basin.

INMACOM said the collaboration unites regional institutions under a shared communication framework to ensure consistent and coordinated messaging. By aligning outreach activities and pooling resources, the commission aims to strengthen public awareness, harmonise stakeholder engagement, and advance sustainable management of transboundary water resources for Eswatini, Mozambique, and South Africa.

The partnership is also intended to mobilise additional funding, leverage technical expertise, and enhance INMACOM’s credibility as a proactive facilitator of integrated watercourse development across the basin.
