Maseru – The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority has announced a temporary closure of the A1 road linking Mapholaneng and Mokhotlong to prepare for the official opening of the Senqu Bridge.
According to a public notice issued by the Authority’s Public Relations Office, the new approach road to the Senqu Bridge will be closed from 6am on April 21 until 6am on April 23, 2026.
The closure is expected to cause traffic delays for road users travelling between the two towns during that period.
The restriction has been put in place to ensure smooth preparations for the official launch of the bridge, which will be presided over by Lesotho’s King Letsie III and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday.
Motorists and surrounding communities have been advised to plan their journeys in advance and exercise caution during the closure period. The LHDA expressed appreciation for the public’s patience and cooperation as the country prepares for the occasion.
The Senqu Bridge forms part of key infrastructure developments under the Lesotho Highlands Water Project and is expected to significantly improve connectivity and transport efficiency in the highlands region.
For emaSwati who regularly travel through Lesotho, particularly those using the highlands route between Eswatini and South Africa, the road closure between April 21 and 23 is worth factoring into travel plans ahead of time.
