Gaborone – Botswana President Duma Boko officially opened the Debswana World Athletics Relays 2026 at the UB Indoor Sports Arena in Gaborone on Thursday, describing the occasion as a proud moment for the country and a powerful demonstration of Botswana’s ability to host world-class sporting events.
Boko welcomed athletes, officials and delegations from across the globe, expressing gratitude for their participation and for choosing Botswana as the host nation for the prestigious competition.
The President said the event represents more than athletics, telling the gathering that it reflects unity, excellence and the power of sport to bring nations and people together. He described hosting the World Athletics Relays as a defining milestone for Botswana and the African continent, saying it demonstrates the country’s readiness, capability and ambition on the global stage.
Boko also praised the patriotism and unity shown by Batswana throughout the preparations and opening of the event, saying it sends a clear message to the world that Botswana is ready, capable and rising.
The opening ceremony also featured a performance by Dr Vom, who delivered a rendition of the iconic anthem “Tsaya Thobane,” drawing a strong response from the crowd inside the arena and anchoring the occasion in Botswana’s cultural heritage and national identity.
