Mexico City – Ghana is set to reopen its diplomatic mission in Mexico, with Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister James Gyakye Quayson formally conveying the government’s intention to Mexican authorities during a consultative visit to the country.
Quayson told Mexican authorities that the decision to reopen the mission is driven by a desire to strengthen ties between the two countries through trade and investment, as well as cooperation in agriculture, education, tourism, innovation and capacity building.
Ghana and Mexico have maintained diplomatic relations since 1961, built on mutual respect, solidarity and a shared commitment to international cooperation. Mexican authorities welcomed the announcement and assured Quayson of their readiness to provide the necessary support to facilitate the reopening of the mission.
During the visit, Quayson met with Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs of the United Mexican States, Ambassador Maria Teresa Mercado, where discussions focused on deepening economic and technical cooperation. The two sides also explored opportunities for broader collaboration in trade facilitation, technical exchange, cultural diplomacy and education.
The reopening of the mission is expected to improve the delivery of consular services to Ghanaian nationals living in the jurisdiction and promote people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
Quayson also met with members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the business community and other stakeholders, using the opportunity to make the case for Ghana as a preferred investment destination.
