The Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Thulisile Dladla handed over completed new houses to three child-headed homesteads in the Lubombo region on Wednesday.

Dladla toured these newly completed two-roomed projects at Nkonjwa, Mboli and Mpopotha that were constructed for orphaned and vulnerable children.

The recipients include one Given Msibi, a 21-year-old man who was raised by his grandmother after losing both his parents, and Temusa Gwala, an 11-year-old minor who cannot be identified for ethical reasons.

Given Msibi was one of the recipients of a new house.

Msibi was staying in a one-roomed stick and mud flat before the upgrade to a modest abode. He has also been sleeping on the floor. However, DPM Dladla promised that he would have a new bed delivered and would enroll at a college.

The Gwala family at Nkonjwa has also experienced an improvement in their living conditions and dignity. They were also staying at a one-room flat that was leaking. The community leadership identified them as among the most vulnerable families, which prompted the intervention.

“Today I can say with pride that I am going to a warm home. Even if the biggest storm can come, I know that I am under better shelter than where we are staying. Thank you,” she said.

The homesteads also have water tanks and are to receive solar panels.

The DPM said financial assistance to construct these homesteads came from the Republic of China (Taiwan). For 58 years, Taiwan and Eswatini have deepened their diplomatic ties.
