WASHINGTON, USA – President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday in what could be a tense diplomatic exchange aimed at mending increasingly strained relations between the two countries.

South Africa’s delegation will include prominent figures such as billionaire businessman Johann Rupert and golfing legends Ernie Els and Retief Goosen. The unusual composition of the team has raised eyebrows in both Pretoria and Washington, particularly as speculation swirls about the possibility of a confrontational or even embarrassing exchange.

Concerns have mounted that the meeting could mirror the now-infamous televised clash between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier this year. Speaking to journalists upon his arrival in the US capital, Ramaphosa dismissed such fears, saying South Africans “always go into everything holding their heads high.”

The South African president said he expected “really good” discussions that would serve the country’s interests in terms of trade, jobs, and diplomatic relations.

“We are looking forward to a very good outcome for our country, for our people,” Ramaphosa said.

Ramaphosa indicated that key geopolitical topics would be on the agenda, including the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. He said South Africa’s foreign policy would be clearly articulated in the discussions with Trump and his administration.

“We are going to have an opportunity to discuss geopolitical issues, not only Israel, but also Ukraine,” he said. “We will put South Africa’s interests first.”

While Rupert, Els and Goosen are expected to attend strategic side meetings in support of Ramaphosa’s diplomatic mission, South African-born tech billionaire Elon Musk will not be present, despite earlier speculation.

According to News24, Rupert played a key role in facilitating the meeting between the two presidents amid heightened tensions sparked by Trump’s controversial granting of refugee status to 49 Afrikaners earlier this year.

Rupert revealed that it was Ernie Els who helped convince Trump to sit down with Ramaphosa. Both Els and Rupert have been in Washington for several days and are reportedly working behind the scenes to ensure a productive meeting.

The encounter comes at a critical time for Pretoria, as it seeks to clarify its global alliances and protect economic ties with Washington following months of diplomatic friction.
