JOHANNESBURG – Omoda has officially unveiled its latest plug-in hybrid SUV, the C9 PHEV, in the South African market, combining electric mobility with petrol-powered performance and a suite of high-end luxury features.
The launch took place last month, positioning the C9 PHEV as the flagship in Omoda’s lineup. It delivers a powerful 440kW and 915Nm from its electric motor and 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, offering a claimed electric-only range of up to 150 kilometres. Together with a full fuel tank and battery, drivers can expect a range exceeding 1,100 kilometres.
The 34.5kWh battery can be charged in 5.5 hours using a home wall box. On the road, the battery can be recharged from 30% to 80% in just 25 minutes at a DC fast charger.
The vehicle is available in a single ‘Explore’ trim, featuring 20-inch alloy wheels, LED head and taillights, a panoramic sunroof, and a bold diamond-pattern front grille. Inside, the cabin is lined with Nappa leather, with heated and ventilated seats for both front and rear passengers, an electrically adjustable steering wheel, and acoustic laminated glass for a quieter ride.
Technology plays a central role in the driving experience, with dual 12.3-inch digital screens, voice-activated controls, and a 12-speaker Sony sound system. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 50-watt wireless charging pad come standard.
Omoda has also prioritised practicality. The SUV includes a powered tailgate, 660 litres of boot space that expands to 1,783 litres with the rear seats folded, and several smart convenience features like remote start, push-button ignition, and automatic climate control with rear-seat controls.
Safety features include Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind-Spot Monitoring, Lane Departure Prevention, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert with braking, and a 540-degree surround-view camera. Multiple airbags, including knee and bolster units, further add to occupant protection.
The C9 PHEV is priced at R999,000. Each unit is sold with a seven-year/100,000km service plan, a seven-year/200,000km vehicle warranty, and a 10-year/one-million km engine warranty. The power battery pack comes with a 10-year/unlimited km warranty for the first owner, reverting to 200,000 km for others. Buyers also receive seven years of roadside assistance.
