MHLUMENI – Her Majesty the Indlovukazi has brought renewed hope to an elderly widow in Mhlumeni, Gogo Fakubi Mkhabela, following the loss of her home to a mysterious fire known locally as Lubane.
The 77-year-old’s situation was brought to the attention of the Queen Mother by emissary Ntombi Matse, after Gogo was found living in a dilapidated one-room structure owned by her son. The building had severe cracks and leaks, making it unsafe for habitation.
Through the support of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office and the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), a new two-roomed house with a bathroom was built for her. The construction was completed in just two weeks by the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF), who were assigned the task. 
Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla officially handed over the house on Sunday, joined by Mhlumeni Chief Jozane, MP Joseph Souza and Principal Secretary Siboniso Nkambule. The DPM thanked the local leadership for providing the land and announced plans for a temporary kitchen and fencing for Gogo’s safety.
The DPM also called on the community to continue caring for the elderly, urging Gogo’s neighbours and relatives to stay involved in her wellbeing.
Gogo, now living with her last-born son and seven grandchildren, was visibly emotional during the ceremony. She recalled how the fire destroyed her home and all her possessions, including food and essential documents. She expressed heartfelt thanks to neighbours who assisted her through the ordeal.
Chief Jozane praised the swift intervention by Her Majesty and government, describing it as an example of leadership that listens. He also applauded the UEDF for completing the house in record time.
As part of the ceremony, emissary Ntombi Matse handed over a blanket from Inkhosikati LaNkambule to Gogo, while community member Sharon Maziya pledged to donate curtains for the new home.
