King eyes energy projects during Mozambique visit

Maputo – His Majesty King Mswati III has laid out intentions for Eswatini to deepen investment in energy projects, as part of efforts to meet the country’s minimum energy baseload and improve regional electricity security.

The King made these remarks during a guided tour of Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), a state-owned power utility in Maputo. The visit included an overview of a major infrastructure plant worth E3.3 billion, which supplies electricity across Mozambique and exports power to neighbouring countries.

The King’s itinerary also took him to MozParks, a developer of Sustainable Economic Zones (SEZs), run through a public-private partnership between Mozambique’s investment agency APIEX and Swiss-Mozambican investors. The SEZs serve as industrial hubs offering tax breaks and infrastructure to encourage manufacturing and exports.

At MozParks, His Majesty was received by the company’s Chief Executive Officer, who later escorted him to Midas Cables, a cable production plant within the SEZ. The facility manufactures aluminium, copper, and fibre optic cables used in power line installations, with raw materials sourced from Mozal, one of the largest industrial players within the zone.
