Witbank – Heavy morning fog led to a chain of crashes on South Africa’s N12 highway yesterday, forcing its closure as emergency crews worked to assist victims.
The dense mist reduced visibility to almost nothing, creating hazardous driving conditions that left several cars and trucks mangled on the road. Authorities have not yet confirmed the number of casualties or the extent of injuries.
Witnesses described a scene of chaos and destruction. “There are injured people all over the road. The cars and trucks look like skeletons in the mist,” said one motorist caught in the pile-up.
Traffic officials have urged drivers to use alternative routes until the N12 is reopened.
