Durban, KwaZulu-Natal — Floyd Shivambu, former secretary-general of the MK Party and co-founder of the EFF, says his new political initiative, Mayibuye iAfrika, will grow bigger than the ANC, EFF, and MK Party.
Shivambu spoke to volunteers at Greyville Racecourse on Sunday, outlining plans to transition the movement from a consultative process to a fully fledged political party. He said the movement will integrate a labour union, civic organisations, and NGOs to create a broad-based political force.
Shivambu insisted Mayibuye iAfrika is independent of existing parties. “It’s not a breakaway from the MK Party, EFF, or ANC,” he said. “It’s an organisation by itself and will be bigger than all three.”
The outreach comes after Shivambu’s expulsion from the MK Party earlier this month. The party cited breaches of trust and ideological misalignment as reasons for his removal. MK Party chairperson Nathi Nhleko said Shivambu publicly positioned himself outside the party’s ranks, leading to the termination of his membership on 15 July 2025.
Shivambu, who briefly served as MK Party secretary-general, joined in August 2024 after leaving the EFF. His tenure was marked by controversy, including a church visit in Malawi led by fugitive preacher Shepherd Bushiri, and plans to redeploy him to Parliament were never realised.
Through the Mayibuye iAfrika Consultation Process, Shivambu is engaging church leaders and community organisations nationwide with the aim of establishing a new party for the upcoming electoral cycle.
