No lives lost during disaster operations, says NDMA

According to a report carried by the Eswatini Observer, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) Chief Executive Officer Victor Mahlalela says the country has not recorded any loss of life during emergency response operations.

Mahlalela made the remarks yesterday during the commemoration of World Humanitarian Day, observed annually on August 18. This year’s event was held under the theme “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities”.

He explained that while disasters in recent months had claimed lives, none occurred during official rescue and response missions. In January, torrential rains claimed eight lives, affecting 9 494 people from 2 361 households, and damaging infrastructure such as schools, bridges, roads, crops and livestock.

Mahlalela said the NDMA always placed the safety of staff, partners and volunteers at the centre of its operations. He noted that the agency was working closely with communities to increase awareness on disaster risks and to build resilience against hazards.

Marking World Humanitarian Day, Mahlalela said the occasion honoured the work of humanitarian workers who continued to serve on the frontlines of emergencies. He stressed that their role was to save lives, protect livelihoods and ensure that no Liswati was left behind during disasters.

“We celebrate this day by recognising the dedication of our staff, stakeholders and thousands of community-based volunteers who tirelessly serve across Eswatini. Our combined efforts ensure that prevention, preparedness, mitigation and response are translated into real action,” he said.

The CEO also acknowledged the government, development partners, civil society and the private sector for their continued support. He further called on all Emaswati to embrace the spirit of humanity in their daily lives.
