KIGALI – Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Mozambican President Daniel Chapo signed new agreements on Wednesday to deepen cooperation in peace, security and trade between their two countries.
The signing ceremony took place in Kigali during Chapo’s first state visit to Rwanda since his election in October 2024. The deals included a memorandum of understanding between the Rwanda Development Board and Mozambique’s Investment and Export Promotion Agency, and a Status of the Force Agreement on military support against insurgents in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province.

Kagame and Chapo also held a private meeting before the signing, where they discussed ways to expand collaboration. Kagame said the priority now was ensuring existing agreements are fully implemented, noting progress in security cooperation and trade relations.
Rwandan forces have been stationed in Mozambique since 2021 to help fight jihadist groups, a deployment Kagame said reflects Africa’s responsibility to confront extremism without relying on outside powers.
Chapo thanked Kagame and the Rwandan people for their support, saying the partnership has helped restore stability in Cabo Delgado. He also expressed interest in boosting economic ties, noting that he would visit Rwandan industries and meet private sector players during his trip.
The Mozambican leader extended an invitation to Kagame to visit Mozambique, adding that relations between the two countries are stronger than ever.
