Kanye West concert in SA raises doubts

Johannesburg – American rapper Kanye West has announced he will perform in Johannesburg this December, but questions continue to swirl around the legitimacy of the event.

West, popularly known as Ye, told his millions of followers on X that he will stage his first South African show at Ellis Park Stadium on 13 December 2025. The announcement stirred excitement among some fans, while others raised suspicions about the organisers.

The poster shared online states that the concert is being put together by Monyake Group. The company’s website, however, only displays a poster of the Kanye West concert and lists just one event under its activities, a “Christocentric Worship Event.” Its Instagram page has three posts, all linked to West.

Fans also noted that the website was offline until the day of the concert announcement, sparking further doubt. When contacted, a Monyake Group representative told The Citizen that a press statement would be released on Tuesday to address all questions.

The poster further directs fans to pre-register for tickets on ticketpro.co.za, but the link does not work. The company later admitted on Instagram that there had been a technical issue and promised tickets would be available from 23 September. Ticketpro has not yet issued a statement.

If confirmed, the concert will add West to the growing list of international stars visiting South Africa. Travis Scott is billed for FNB Stadium on 11 October, while Chris Brown performed there in December last year.

This would also mark West’s first performance in South Africa in 12 years. His announcement comes just weeks after his cryptocurrency project, YZY Money, collapsed.
