Siteki – Friday 17th October 2025 at Siteki, the Kingdom of Eswatini commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child under the theme “The Girl That I Am, The Change I Lead – Girls Leading in Crisis.” The event brought together government leaders, development partners, and community representatives to celebrate the resilience, leadership, and potential of girls across the country.
Senator Linda Nxumalo delivered the keynote address, stressing the transformative impact of investing in girls. She said, “When you invest in a girl, you’re not only changing her life, you’re transforming her family, her community, and her country. Boys and men also have a vital role to play. When they champion gender equality, they help create a world where girls are respected, safe, and supported.”
The Senator referenced His Majesty King Mswati III, who has consistently acknowledged the crucial role of women in society, and quoted Her Majesty the Queen Mother, “A woman’s place is not entirely in the kitchen, every woman should realize the power they have and use it to their advantage.” She urged all emaSwati to support girls in embracing their power and shaping their futures on their own terms. 
The commemoration reflected on global milestones, including the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in 1995 and the UN’s designation of October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child in 2011. Thirty years on, girls worldwide are breaking barriers in education, health, innovation, and leadership.

Vocational training providing skills in tailoring, catering, ICT, agriculture, and more through the Eswatini Youth Empowerment Program
Green economy leadership promoting agribusiness and renewable energy opportunities for girls
Mbabane Municipal Council CEO Gciniwe Fakudze inspired attendees with a message of self-belief and ambition. Other speakers included UNFPA’s Margaret Thwala-Tembe and a representative from the Lubombo Regional Administration, all reinforcing the importance of supporting girls to reach their full potential.
