Maseru — Prime Minister Samuel Matekane of Lesotho hosted a Christmas charity luncheon on Friday, bringing together vulnerable children from various districts across the country. The annual event, now in its third year, aims to support children living with disabilities and brighten their festive season.
Matekane, who has pledged to donate his entire monthly salary to this cause since taking office in 2022, reaffirmed his commitment to continue forgoing his salary throughout his term. He expressed appreciation for the “little PMs,” the children involved in the initiative, and welcomed the newly appointed little Prime Minister, Honourable Bohlokoa Molai.
During his address, the Prime Minister spoke about the importance of teaching young people responsibility, integrity, and public service. He also extended his gratitude to the private sector for their significant contributions, including a golf tournament that raised M1 million to fund the event. To improve mobility for children with disabilities, Matekane announced the provision of charging devices for wheelchairs. 
Minister in the PM’s Office, Mr. Limpho Tau, reflected on Matekane’s early pledge to forgo his salary, a commitment that has grown into a widely supported annual event. Tau highlighted the initiative’s role in advancing quality education for Basotho children.
Outgoing little PM, Mr. Mandla Malewa, looked back on his term with appreciation and officially handed over to Ms. Molai. The new little PM described her appointment as a life-changing honour and pledged to lead with honesty and service, inspired by Matekane’s example.
The charity event, which included performances by the children, is estimated to have cost M1 million, funded through donations and private sector support.
