Lagos, Nigeria – TikTok has introduced a temporary ban on live streaming for Nigerian users between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. daily. The restriction affects both hosting and viewing live broadcasts from other countries, according to affected users.
The platform issued a system notification explaining the move, saying it aims to keep the platform safe and protect the community. Some users reported the live feature had completely disappeared during the restricted hours.
The overnight limitation comes amid rising concerns over inappropriate content on late-night streams. Reports indicate some users hosted adult-themed sessions where viewers sent gifts, raising safety and moderation issues. The ban has also impacted Nigerians who rely on live streaming as a source of income.
TikTok’s moderation reports show the scale of enforcement in Nigeria. Between January and March 2025, the company removed over 3.6 million videos for breaching community rules. In the following quarter, 49,512 live sessions were banned, while globally, more than 2.3 million live streams and over 1 million creators faced penalties for guideline violations.
