Lesotho attends IOM council talks

Lesotho’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Hon Lejone Mpotjoane, joined global leaders at the 116th Session of the International Organization for Migration Council where member states reviewed international migration trends and discussed how to improve governance systems that support safe and orderly movement across borders.

The meeting took place this week in Geneva and brought governments together to look at shared responsibilities in managing migration pressures, labour mobility and protection for vulnerable groups.

On the sidelines of the council session, Minister Mpotjoane met IOM Director General Amy Pope for talks on Lesotho’s ongoing migration governance programmes. Their discussion covered the installation of the Migration Information and Data Analysis System, ethical recruitment, anti trafficking initiatives, diaspora engagement and challenges linked to climate related mobility. The minister also raised Lesotho’s plan to establish decentralised agro market aggregation centres which aim to improve rural incomes and reduce outward migration.

The minister then held talks with the Philippines Minister of the Department of Migrant Workers. The two countries explored possible cooperation in labour migration management, skills development and the protection of migrant workers. Lesotho expressed appreciation for the Philippines’ expertise in managing overseas labour systems and welcomed continued collaboration at multilateral platforms.

A meeting with Botswana’s Minister of Labour and Home Affairs focused on strengthening labour mobility between the two neighbours. The talks also explored ways to safeguard migrant workers, formalise cross border informal trade and expand joint skills development efforts in new and emerging industries.

Through all engagements, Minister Mpotjoane conveyed Lesotho’s intention to deepen partnerships that improve migration governance and broaden economic opportunities. The discussions position Lesotho as an active participant in regional and global dialogue on migration management.
