Maseru – Lesotho Prime Minister Ntsokoane Matekane has received a major agricultural storage and logistics facility from the People’s Republic of China, a project valued at M150 million, as the two countries deepen cooperation on food security.
The handover took place on Wednesday at Ha Foso in Maseru, where Matekane said the facility marked a shift towards long term food security and national self reliance rather than a once off donation. He said the project followed the recent delivery of agricultural machinery from China and pointed to a broader response to Lesotho’s production and storage challenges.

Matekane said the government was pursuing an agricultural transformation that connects production, storage, processing and marketing into a working value chain. He expressed appreciation to China for its continued development support and pledged Lesotho’s backing of the One China policy.
Chinese Ambassador to Lesotho Yang Xiaokun said his country was ready to strengthen cooperation with Lesotho to improve food security, noting the country’s arable land and available human resources. He said 2025 would be a decisive year for Lesotho as it works to address external pressures while delivering tangible results for its people.
Yang added that the agricultural machinery handed over in October had already strengthened bilateral relations and contributed to the modernisation of Lesotho’s farming sector.
Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition Minister Thabo Mofosi said the new grain storage facility would restore confidence among farmers who have struggled for years with post harvest losses due to inadequate storage. He said the project responds directly to farmers’ long standing concerns and supports national food security goals.
