Mbabane – The Ministry of Education’s Principal Secretary, Prince Mshishimba, has called literacy a foundational pillar for national development, speaking at the official launch of the Eswatini Literacy Foundation.

Prince Mshishimba told those gathered that literacy in the 21st century goes beyond the ability to read and write. He said it must now include the capacity to navigate, understand and effectively participate in an increasingly digital society.

The Principal Secretary said traditional literacy remains the bedrock of all education and the essential foundation upon which digital skills must be built.

He outlined the broader socio-economic case for digital literacy, describing it as a key enabler of employment and entrepreneurship, a driver of economic empowerment particularly for small and medium enterprises, and an essential tool for social inclusion and access to public services.

Prince Mshishimba said the establishment of the Eswatini Literacy Foundation represents more than the launch of an institution. He described it as the beginning of a national movement aimed at equipping all Emaswati with the skills needed to participate meaningfully in the modern economy.
