Mbabane – The Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) has revealed that its former Deputy Secretary General, Simanga Khumalo, is recovering in hospital after a near-fatal head-on collision with a truck at Mankayane on Wednesday evening, 22 April 2026.
Khumalo had been in Mbabane earlier that day as part of a petition delivery activity organised by Public Sector Unions (PSUs) relating to the Notch 2 matter. He had arrived in the capital around 8am and parked his vehicle inside the Treasury Department’s parking lot.
When police pushed workers off the premises of the Ministry of Public Service, his car was left behind for most of the day. He only managed to retrieve it late in the afternoon, forcing him to drive home in the evening through heavy mist, which SNAT says contributed to the accident.
Khumalo was trapped inside the wreckage for close to an hour before police rescued him and rushed him to Mankayane Government Hospital in a critical condition. Doctors found that he had suffered severe patella injuries, and he was subsequently transferred to Mbabane Government Hospital for specialised medical attention.
“As a Union, we are still reeling in shock about this ordeal. We, however, remain grateful that he was able to survive the deadly accident on the day,” SNAT Secretary General Lot Vilakati said in a statement issued on Friday, 24 April 2026.
The union extended prayers and best wishes to Khumalo’s family and friends, while also passing on the family’s appeal for privacy during what it described as a painful period.
