Manchester City came from behind to beat Bournemouth 2–1 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, giving new manager Enzo Maresca a winning start in his first Premier League match in charge.
Bournemouth took the lead in the 26th minute through Marcus Tavernier, who finished at the back post after Evanilson created the opening.
The visitors continued to frustrate City for much of the match, with goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic making important saves to deny Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo.
City’s response arrived late. Substitute Rayan Cherki delivered a corner in the 84th minute, allowing Marc Guehi to head the equaliser and bring the home side back into the contest.
Cherki then played a decisive role again in stoppage time when his pass set up Josko Gvardiol, who found the net to complete the comeback.
The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but a video assistant referee review confirmed that Gvardiol had stayed onside. The decision triggered celebrations on the touchline and in the stands.
The result also marked Maresca’s first home victory since succeeding Pep Guardiola as Manchester City manager. Bournemouth’s defeat came in Marco Rose’s first Premier League match in charge of the club.
City created several chances before the late turnaround, although Haaland missed a close range opportunity in the first half and failed to convert other openings after the break.
Cherki was rated Manchester City’s best player by the match assessment after changing the game from the bench and providing both assists. Gvardiol was also praised for recovering from a difficult defensive moment to score the winning goal.
Manchester City’s starting goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made key saves during the match, while Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott and Tavernier were among the visitors’ stronger performers.
The victory gave Maresca three points in his first league match as City manager, while Bournemouth were left to reflect on a match they appeared close to winning until the closing minutes.
