Six officials from South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs have been dismissed with immediate effect following internal investigations that uncovered fraud and corruption.
The department also issued final written warnings to six others, as part of an intensified disciplinary drive. Since July 2024, a total of 33 officials have been shown the door in a sweeping clean-up effort.
Eight officials have already been convicted and sentenced to prison terms ranging between four and 18 years. Meanwhile, 19 others are currently facing criminal charges. 
These latest dismissals are linked to the recent formation of the Border Management and Immigration Anti-Corruption Forum, which has improved coordination between Home Affairs, the Border Management Authority (BMA), the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber welcomed the swift progress being made, saying the department is committed to ridding itself of corrupt staff.
“We are working with urgency to clear out wrongdoing. Anyone still involved in criminal activity should know it’s only a matter of time before we catch you,” said Schreiber.
