Mbabane – The Civil Service Commission (CSC) has renewed the contract of Government Spokesperson, Alpheous M. Nxumalo, whose term ended in May 2025. The decision, announced yesterday, comes as his criminal case remains before the courts.

According to the CSC, an offer to extend Nxumalo’s contract had already been issued in February 2025, three months before the lapse of his previous term. The offer, which was based on recommendations from the relevant ministry, was accepted by Nxumalo prior to him being charged in April.

The Commission noted that Nxumalo held a legitimate expectation of renewal, having received the formal notice, and that legally there was no basis to withdraw the offer. It added that he remains innocent until proven guilty.

Although the contract has been renewed, Nxumalo has been placed on leave of absence pending the outcome of his court case. The CSC explained that this is in line with General Orders, which require civil servants facing criminal charges to be suspended until their matters are finalized.

The Commission stated it will decide on Nxumalo’s future in the Civil Service after the courts deliver their ruling.
