LOBAMBA — Lesotho’s King Letsie III led tributes from foreign heads of state at a foggy and rain-soaked Somhlolo National Stadium on Thursday, describing King Mswati III’s 40 years on the throne as a rare and extraordinary achievement rooted in selfless leadership and devotion to his people.
Speaking on behalf of visiting heads of state during the Ruby Jubilee celebrations, King Letsie III said the occasion was more than a personal milestone, calling it “a shining testament to joy, selfless leadership, resilience and devotion to your people.”
He said King Mswati III had guided the Kingdom of Eswatini through complex political, social and economic challenges over four decades, providing steady and indispensable leadership. He also commended the Swazi monarch for offering calm and clear moral direction at critical moments requiring principled decision-making.
King Letsie III praised the 40-year reign as underpinned by a dedication to preserving cultural heritage while shaping a progressive future for generations to come. He also applauded the continued advancement of Eswatini in infrastructure, health, education, economic growth and social development, describing these as key pillars of a prosperous nation.
King Mswati III, in his own address, reflected on his coronation 40 years ago and expressed gratitude to emaSwati for their unwavering support since he ascended to the throne at the age of 18. He acknowledged the transformation of Eswatini into a developing and stable nation, crediting the support of the Queen Mother, Ndlovukati Ntombi Tfwala, and the nation at large for the progress achieved.
He also pointed to key developments realised during his reign, including improvements in the health sector, economic growth, infrastructure development, education and social welfare.
Born Makhosetive Dlamini on April 19, 1968, King Mswati III was crowned Ngwenyama on April 25, 1986. The Kingdom is currently marking a dual celebration of his 58th birthday and the 40-year Ruby Jubilee of his reign.
