Johannesburg – Unidentified shooters attacked and killed 12 people at Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg, on Tuesday night.
Nine others were wounded in the mass shooting. eNCA reported that eight men and three women identified were declared dead on the scene, with one male victim declared dead in hospital. The nine others were transported to various hospitals for treatment.
Eyewitnesses said more than 10 heavily armed men dropped off from a Toyota Quantum and started shooting in different directions before fleeing the scene. The shooting was reported to have lasted for more than an hour. 
The police are investigating the incident with a motive not yet determined. Gauteng police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni visited the scene on Wednesday, alleging that the shooting could be linked to illegal mining activities in the area.
