The African Union Commission has thrown its full support behind the ten African nations competing at the FIFA World Cup 2026, which kicked off on Wednesday, with AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressing confidence that the continent’s representatives will inspire and excel on football’s biggest stage.
“This record level of African participation reflects the continued rise of African football and the talent, resilience, and determination of its players. It is a moment of continental pride, uniting Africans across all regions in shared hope and celebration,” said Youssouf.
He said the World Cup remains a unique global celebration that brings nations and peoples together through a shared love of the beautiful game, noting that “the World Cup is where the world meets in peace through sport.” 
Youssouf said African football embodies the strength, ambition and promise of the continent’s youth, stating that “Africa’s strength in football reflects the strength of its youth,” and adding that the teams carry not only national expectations but also the aspirations of a generation.
The AU commended the players, coaches, officials and supporters whose dedication made this moment possible, and called on all the teams to compete with excellence, discipline, integrity and respect for fair play.
