Eswatini, Mozambique push economic ties

MBABANE – His Royal Highness Prince Lonkhokhela, Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, on Thursday, June 12, convened a high-level meeting in Mbabane with key stakeholders. The gathering was a direct follow-up to strategic discussions between His Majesty King Mswati III and Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo earlier this week, aimed at forging immediate economic cooperation between the two nations.

The primary goal of the meeting was to identify concrete areas for swift collaboration, acting on the clear directives from both Heads of State to bolster their respective economies. Discussions, currently ongoing among involved organizations, are particularly focused on Eswatini’s ambitions to increase electricity production and leverage Mozambique’s natural gas resources.

President Chapo, during his visit to Eswatini from June 9 to June 10, mentioned his government’s plans to construct gas pipelines to transport natural gas, discovered in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, to neighboring countries including Eswatini. This aligns with Eswatini’s long-term energy strategy.

The meeting included Principal Secretary Sizwe Ntshangase from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, along with senior officials, as well as Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) Managing Director Alan Mkhonta and his team. When hosting President Chapo at Mandvulo Grand Hall on June 9, King Mswati III called for prompt action on these agreements, stating he expected updates within two weeks and weekly reports thereafter, prompting the swift assembly of stakeholders by Prince Lonkhokhela.
