DAURA – Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari was buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday following his death in London at the age of 82.
Buhari’s remains arrived at Katsina Airport where they were received by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu before being transported to Daura. The former leader died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a long illness while undergoing treatment at The London Clinic.
The late statesman was given a full military burial, with gun salutes and military processions accompanying Islamic burial rites. His body was lowered into the ground at 5:50pm, witnessed by family members, political associates, and close friends. His widow Aisha Buhari and several high-ranking officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and business mogul Aliko Dangote, attended the funeral.

Daura, a farming town in North-West Nigeria, was not only Buhari’s birthplace but also where he was affectionately known as “Mai Gaskiya,” meaning truth-teller in Hausa. His leadership spanned both military and civilian administrations, serving first as military head of state from 1984 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
The Nigerian government declared a day of national mourning with flags flown at half-mast. Buhari’s rule left a complex legacy, with supporters praising his anti-corruption efforts while critics questioned his handling of key national issues.
