European film festival opens with Irish movie in Ezulwini

Ezulwini – Film lovers gathered at Movie Zone in Ezulwini on 29 August 2025 for the opening of this year’s European Film Festival, which kicked off with the screening of the Irish production Dating Amber.

The festival, a Team Europe initiative, is organised by the European Union in Eswatini in partnership with Alliance française de Mbabane and seven EU member states accredited to the country: Austria, Cyprus, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy and Sweden.

The opening night drew a large crowd, with guests enjoying the youth-inspired film. Among the dignitaries in attendance were EU Ambassador to Eswatini Karsten Mecklenburg, Irish Chargé d’Affaires Aileen O’Donovan, who introduced the film, and UK High Commissioner Colin Wells.

The festival will resume in Mbabane from 18 to 21 September, with screenings scheduled at Mbabane Theatre Club and Alliance française. One of the featured films will be I Am Zlatan, the Swedish biopic of football star Zlatan Ibrahimovic, which will be screened on 20 September at Alliance française de Mbabane.
