Two Zimbabweans held for mercury in South Africa

Middelburg, South Africa – Two Zimbabwean nationals were remanded in custody in South Africa after being caught with mercury.

Muzama Shingirirai (34) and Lovejoy Tavenga (39) appeared at Middelburg Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga on charges of illegal possession of mercury. Their case was postponed to 18 September 2025 for further investigation.

The men were arrested on Wednesday, 10 September, after South African police spotted a white BMW with Gauteng registration plates on the N4 Road near the Van Dyk offramp. Officers from Crime Intelligence and the Middelburg Flying Squad had received information about the suspicious vehicle.

A search revealed a plastic bag in the boot containing three bottles of a silver liquid suspected to be mercury. Authorities believe the consignment may have been destined for delivery in Gauteng Province.

The two remain in custody as investigations continue.
