Mbabane – His Majesty King Mswati III, as the incoming chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, has urged Malawians to ensure tomorrow’s general election is peaceful and credible.
The people of Malawi are scheduled to cast their votes on 16 September 2025, choosing a President, Members of Parliament and Councillors in line with the country’s Constitution.
At the request of the Malawian government, SADC has dispatched its Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) led by Eswatini’s former Deputy Prime Minister, Themba N. Masuku. The mission will monitor the pre-election phase, polling day, and post-election activities under the revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections adopted in 2021.
King Mswati noted that Malawi has long been known for peace and stability, and expressed confidence the country would maintain this tradition during the electoral process. He said SADC’s role is to facilitate a credible and inclusive vote while providing support throughout the period.
The King appealed to eligible Malawians to turn out in large numbers, exercise their democratic right, and contribute to the development of their country. He also urged political leaders and their supporters to respect the will of the people and use legal channels to resolve disputes.
He concluded by extending good wishes to Malawians, expressing hope the elections will strengthen democracy, foster unity, and pave the way for the nation’s prosperity.
