Gqeberha – Kaizer Chiefs missed the chance to close in on Orlando Pirates at the top of the Betway Premiership after being held 0-0 by Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Wednesday.
The draw leaves Chiefs five points behind Pirates, with both teams having played 12 matches. Chiefs now look to reduce the gap when they face TS Galaxy in Mbombela on Sunday, ahead of Pirates’ Carling Black Label Knockout final on Saturday.
Chiefs made several changes from their recent 1-1 draw with Zamalek, partly due to injuries and the need to rest players. Asanele Velebayi caused problems on the left wing, cutting inside to shoot and delivering a well-placed cross that striker Flavio Silva failed to convert. Mfundo Vilakazi also impressed on the right flank, though many of his final passes fell short.
Chippa United, fielding Justice Figuareido up front, looked limited in attack despite a few near misses, including an offside call that disallowed a promising run. Nkosingiphile Ngcobo came close for Chiefs in the second half, only for goalkeeper Dumisani Msibi to tip his shot over the bar. Flavio Silva and Chippa’s Eva Nga had further chances, but both goalkeepers remained alert to preserve the stalemate.
