Mbabane – Over 500 Umbutfo regiments marched from Ngabezweni to Ludzidzini Royal Residence on Sunday, 21 December, signalling the start of the 2025/26 Incwala season, according to a report by the Eswatini Observer.
Clad in full traditional attire with shields, headgear, and heritage colours, the regiments moved with precision, their songs rising through the afternoon air. The march from Lozitha to Lobamba showcased centuries of Eswatini history, blending disciplined formations, rhythmic chants, and spiritual devotion. Participants braved the warm afternoon sun, viewing the physical challenge as part of the ritual’s significance.
Onlookers gathered along the route to witness the spectacle, which included Royal Leopard midfielder Felix Badenhorst and South African actor Thulani Mtsweni among the participants. The march marks the start of a sequence of ceremonies leading to the main Incwala event in the coming days. 
Umbutfo Gibelimoto expressed his excitement, describing the day as a moment of honour and spiritual awakening. “This is a special time for the nation. We are more than ready for what is coming. Incwala calls us to be strong, disciplined and united,” he said.
Fifteen-year-old Mkaratdi Shongwe of Sifandzani High School joined the march for the first time, brought along by his grandfather. He described the experience as new, exciting, and physically challenging, encouraging youth participation in such traditions.
Other regiments, including Ntabende and Nkondlo, enjoyed the atmosphere, praising the energy and spirit of the march.
Upon arrival at Ludzidzini Royal Residence, the regiments’ songs settled into the sacred space, formally marking the beginning of the Incwala season and setting the stage for the nation’s upcoming traditional rituals.
