Man arrested with 169kg dagga at border

A 40 year old man from Mehlwabovu has been arrested after authorities discovered 169 kilograms of dagga in his possession during an operation along the Mantambe borderline.

According to the Royal Eswatini Police Service, the suspect was charged for possession of a large quantity of dagga without a valid licence or permit. Officers from Sihlutse Police are handling the matter.

The suspect was apprehended on March 3, 2026 at about 2200 hours during an intelligence led operation conducted by members of the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force in the Mantambe area. Authorities said the man was found transporting the illegal substance while driving a white Isuzu LDV.

Police reports state that the arrest followed information gathered about suspected cross border criminal activity in the area. Officers moved in and intercepted the vehicle, leading to the recovery of the 169 kilograms of dagga.

The suspect appeared before the Nhlangano Magistrates’ Court on Thursday where the court ordered that he be remanded in custody. The case was postponed to March 26, 2026.

Police also commended members of the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force for their vigilance during the operation. Authorities said cooperation between the two law enforcement agencies continues to assist in tackling various forms of crime, particularly those linked to cross border activities, while supporting efforts to maintain peace and security in the country.
