Mbabane – Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini hosted South Africa’s Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina, during a courtesy visit held at the Private and Cabinet Office in Mbabane on March 13, 2026.

The meeting, attended by HRH Prince Lonkhokhela, Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, came as both countries concluded the signing of the revised Komati Basin Water Authority treaty earlier the same day.

The agreement is aimed at strengthening cooperation between Eswatini and South Africa in managing shared water resources, while opening up new development opportunities and supporting regional economic growth.

Dlamini said projects such as the Maguga Dam continue to demonstrate the success of collaboration between the two countries and serve as a model for future initiatives. He noted that ongoing discussions between the two governments point to a shared vision of using water as a tool for peace, cooperation and development.

He also referenced regional and continental examples, including the leadership of King Letsie III of Lesotho in advancing water driven development, as well as Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, a multi billion dollar project designed to generate about 5,150 megawatts of electricity.

The engagement comes as the African Union has declared 2026 the Year of Water and Sanitation, placing focus on the role of water in driving sustainable development across the continent.
