MALABO, Equatorial Guinea – Minister of Foreign Affairs Pholile Shakantu says His Majesty King Mswati III has helped restore confidence and stability within the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States following a period of financial strain.
Speaking in Malabo, where leaders have been engaging on the future of the 79 member bloc, Shakantu expressed gratitude to the King for taking up the role of Resource Mobilisation Champion at a time when the organisation was facing serious financial challenges.
She recalled that during Eswatini’s tenure as President of the Council of Ministers, government reported the difficult financial position confronting the organisation, including unpaid salaries for some employees based at its Brussels offices.
“During Eswatini’s tenure as President of the Council of Ministers, we reported the concerning financial situation facing the organization, highlighting the alarming issue of unpaid salaries for some employees. His Majesty’s deep concern reflects his commitment to the organization’s well-being and the welfare of its members,” she said.
According to the minister, member states approached the King with a request to lead efforts to mobilise resources to stabilise the institution. She said his acceptance of that responsibility demonstrated readiness to confront the organisation’s pressing challenges.
“His Majesty firmly believes in the principles of multilateralism and is committed to ensuring that the OACPS evolves with strengthened institutional resilience and enhanced self-reliance. This vision not only encompasses an efficient and financially secure organization but also one capable of asserting a strong, unified voice on the global stage,” she stated.
Shakantu, who played a role in executing the King’s mandate during the resuscitation process, described the OACPS as a significant political force representing 79 member states and a combined population of about 1.1 billion people across Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific.
“We are particularly grateful to His Majesty for revitalizing the OACPS and motivating us to pursue collaborative efforts that benefit all member states. His leadership has instilled a sense of confidence and laid the foundation for a successful future for the OACPS,” she said.
