Salima, Malawi – His Majesty’s Correctional Services Deputy Commissioner General Bongani Khumalo is representing Eswatini at the SADC Heads of Corrections/Prisons/Penitentiary Services Annual Conference currently underway in Salima, Malawi.
The conference is being held under the theme “Pathways to Change: Facilitating Effective Offender Rehabilitation and Reintegration in Corrections/Prisons,” bringing together regional correctional leaders to discuss innovative rehabilitation programmes, offender reintegration, restorative justice and strategies aimed at addressing overcrowding and reducing recidivism within correctional facilities.
The gathering presents an important platform for His Majesty’s Correctional Services to strengthen regional cooperation and exchange best practices with fellow SADC correctional institutions.
Through the engagements and deliberations, HMCS is expected to benefit from new approaches in offender rehabilitation, psychosocial support, skills development and community-based reintegration programmes, which are essential in transforming offenders into productive members of society.
The conference will further enhance HMCS efforts in aligning with international correctional standards such as the Nelson Mandela Rules, while also fostering partnerships with international organisations including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and other stakeholders in prison reform and correctional development.
