Windhoek – A Namibian manufacturing and leather processing company, Nakara, has donated leather valued at N$100,000 to the Namibian Correctional Service to support offender rehabilitation and skills training programmes at correctional facilities across the country.

The leather will be used in industrial workshops where inmates receive practical training in upholstery, leatherwork, arts and crafts and the production of leather goods, with the aim of equipping them with marketable skills ahead of their return to society.

Speaking at the handover in Windhoek, Nakara Managing Director Max Schaefes said there was a growing need for skills transfer in trades less vulnerable to technological disruption, noting that leatherwork and practical craftsmanship continued to offer real opportunities for self-employment and entrepreneurship.

Schaefes also revealed that the company had worked with former inmates who were now running successful leathercraft businesses, pointing to their progress as proof that skills training inside correctional facilities could produce lasting results.

Deputy Commissioner-General for Correctional Operations Sam Shaalulange received the donation on behalf of the Namibian Correctional Service, thanking Nakara for its contribution and continued support for offender rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.
