Manzini – South Africa’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande, is in the Kingdom of Eswatini for the launch of National Science Month 2026, hosted by the Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology.
Upon arrival, Prof. Nzimande was welcomed by ICT Minister Savannah Maziya, the Principal Secretary, Director of Research, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr. Rejoice Maseko, Acting South African High Commissioner Mr. Sithole, and other government officials.
As part of his visit, Prof. Nzimande toured KwaMagogo Centre in Trelawney Park, a site of deep historical significance to the liberation struggle of Southern Africa. During the apartheid era, the house known as KwaMagogo, meaning “Grandmother’s Place,” served as a safe haven for members of the African National Congress and its military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe. The home belonged to Rebecca Makgomo Masilela, whose courage provided shelter and support to freedom fighters in exile.
“I am very glad that today I have been able to place my feet here and actually be here and see this very historic house. We thank the children and the grandchildren for keeping the house existing and as a monument,” Prof. Nzimande said during the visit.
He described Rebecca Masilela as “our grandmother in South Africa as well,” acknowledging her bravery, compassion and contribution to the freedom struggle.
The official launch of National Science Month 2026 takes place on Monday, 8 June 2026, and will be broadcast live on Eswatini TV’s YouTube channel.
