UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern over renewed escalation in the Middle East.

Guterres said in a statement delivered by Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for the secretary-general, he was deeply alarmed by the recent developments, calling on concerned parties to stop attacks, exercise maximum restraint, and refrain from escalating the volatile situation.

The secretary-general urged the parties to abide by the ceasefire agreements in Lebanon, Iran, and Gaza. He sees the attacks as undermining ongoing diplomatic efforts and is also passing his worry on to Israel’s decision to close crossings into Gaza.

Immediate reopening of all crossings will unhinge the passing of humanitarian aid throughout Gaza.

“The Secretary-General underscores that the exercise of navigational rights and freedoms, in accordance with international law, must be respected,” the statement reads, further calling on all parties to uphold their obligations under international law and the protection of civilians.

“The only way forward is through dialogue and negotiations,” he said.
