New permit system launched for TV imports

EZULWINI– The Eswatini Revenue Service (ERS) and Eswatini Television Authority (ESTVA) have entered into a new agreement to streamline the importation of television devices through a fully digital system.

Signed this week, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) allows ERS to integrate its border control systems with ESTVA’s licensing database, enabling real-time checks and automated workflows for import permits.

The development means that retailers can now apply for permits online, with the system immediately verifying whether applications meet quota and technical standards. This move is expected to reduce delays at entry points and increase compliance across the board.

ERS Commissioner General Brightwell Nkambule said the system was designed to support the National Trade Facilitation Committee’s strategy to improve the efficiency of imports and exports. According to him, the risk-based filters in the digital workflow will protect compliant traders while curbing irregular shipments.

A second phase of the agreement is already in the pipeline. It will focus on automating TV licence renewals and improving national compliance rates.
