Daura, a farming town in North-West Nigeria, was not only Buhari’s birthplace but also where he was affectionately known as “Mai Gaskiya,” meaning truth-teller in Hausa. His leadership spanned both military and civilian administrations, serving first as military head of state from 1984 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.

The Nigerian government declared a day of national mourning with flags flown at half-mast. Buhari’s rule left a complex legacy, with supporters praising his anti-corruption efforts while critics questioned his handling of key national issues.
