King picks Masuku to head SADC Malawi election mission

Mbabane – His Majesty King Mswati III has appointed former Deputy Prime Minister, Honourable Themba N. Masuku, to head the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to the Republic of Malawi.

Malawi is set to hold its General Elections on 16 September 2025, and Masuku will lead a delegation that will monitor the process to ensure it is transparent, credible, and conducted in line with SADC’s Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections.

The appointment was made in His Majesty’s capacity as the incoming Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, commonly known as the TROIKA.

Government said the Kingdom of Eswatini views this role as an opportunity to strengthen its contributions towards democracy, peace, and regional cooperation.

Masuku, who has held several senior positions in public administration and diplomacy, is regarded as well placed to provide leadership during the observation mission.

Eswatini, as one of the founding members of SADC, has long supported efforts to promote political stability and collective security across the region.
