Johannesburg – Car owners in South Africa face a growing threat as hijackings continue to target everyday vehicles rather than luxury models. Latest figures from the South African Police Service (SAPS) show 4,533 hijackings occurred between July and September 2025, averaging roughly 50 incidents daily.
According to a MoneyToday report, criminals are increasingly targeting common cars, including family sedans, bakkies, and ride-share hatchbacks. The focus is not wealth or status but the resale value of parts on the black market.
The Toyota Hilux leads the list of most hijacked vehicles this year, with 8,742 reported incidents. Other highly targeted vehicles include the VW Polo Vivo (6,834) and Ford Ranger (5,923). Rising on the radar are the Hyundai Grand i10 and Kia Picanto, sought after for their affordable parts. 
Gauteng has seen a rise in syndicates specifically hunting the Toyota Corolla Cross, often using stolen cars to commit secondary crimes such as home robberies. Experts warn that no vehicle is truly “safe” due to the broad demand for parts.
Wahl Bartmann, CEO of Fidelity Services Group, advises drivers to surrender if confronted. “Do not fight for a piece of metal. Your life is the only thing that cannot be replaced,” he said.
