MAPUTO – Mozambique and India have moved to deepen cooperation in the defence sector following the opening of a two day Defence Industry Seminar held in the Mozambican capital on Thursday March 26 2026.

The seminar brings together representatives from India’s Defence Production Department, senior officials from the defence sectors of both countries and several Indian defence companies. It marks what officials described as a new strategic phase in relations between the two nations.

Permanent Secretary in Mozambique’s Ministry of National Defence Casimiro Mueio officially opened the seminar, stating that the platform would help identify mechanisms to promote defence products and create partnerships.

He said the initiative offers an opportunity for the Defence and Security Forces and the wider defence sector to determine the tools and alliances required to respond to existing and potential threats to national security.

“The country today faces challenges of various order, such as natural calamities, transnational crimes, terrorism, illegal immigration, which requires the SDF capability in human and technological means to face them,” said Mueio.

He also expressed hope that the gathering would strengthen cooperation between public and private players in a shared responsibility to safeguard the nation.

On the sidelines of the seminar, India’s High Commissioner to Mozambique Robert Shetkintong handed over two ambulances to the Ministry of National Defence. The vehicles are expected to improve access to health services for military personnel and members of the public.

The programme also features business to business meetings aimed at fostering closer commercial links within the defence industry.
